Fifteen of those sixty-four schools put you past $600,000. The median is over half a million dollars.
And here is the part nobody says out loud: every one of those seats hands you the exact same degree. The same DMD. The same license. The same scope of practice. The patient in your chair in 2035 will never ask where you went, or what you paid to be there. The only thing that changes is the number at the bottom of your loan statement — every month, for twenty years.
And the thing that decides which seat you get is the last variable you still control. Your GPA is locked. Your shadowing hours are already logged. The DAT is the one number left on your application that you can still move — and it’s the one that moves you from good enough to get in somewhere to good enough to choose.
Which is why “good enough” is the most expensive mistake in pre-dental. Matching a school’s average gets you a seat. Beating it by three points gets you a seat, a scholarship conversation, and a real shot at the school that costs half as much. Same test. Same eight weeks of your life. A third of a million dollars of difference in what you pay back.
So don’t study to get in. Study to choose. Eight weeks at the 99th percentile is the highest-paid work you will ever do.

Four-year totals modelled from tuition, fee and cost-of-living figures published circa 2022 for 64 U.S. dental schools, assuming 3.5% annual tuition growth and full federal financing — Direct Unsubsidized at 6.6% and Grad PLUS at 7.6%, origination fees included, with interest accruing in school. Only one school in the set is modelled at in-state rates, so read the rest as out-of-state or private; residency is usually the single biggest lever on what you pay.
